E-911 and the Columbus Police Department received a total of 3,177 calls for service in August, according to reports released by the CPD.

In July, the Columbus Police Department had 2,919 calls for service, many of which — 513 — were traffic related.

This is a great month for the city of Starkville. After months and years of deliberation and public debate, curbside recycling is now available for the citizens of Starkville. Residents of single family households will be able to sign up for curbside pickup with either their utility bill or driver’s license showing a proof of that household’s commitment. The cost to the citizens? Nothing! It is a free service provided by the city, the Sanitation Department, and Starkville Recycling.

Ole Miss game special for Southeastern Louisiana’s Wilson

While growing up in Amory, Chris Wilson was a football fan of the University of Mississippi football team.

Wilson especially liked Ole Miss when Amory natives Rufus French (tight end, 1996-98) and Joe Gunn (running back, 1998-2001) starred for the Rebels.

Wilson aspired to play for the Rebels and was recruited by former Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron.

Wilson will be on the field Saturday when the Rebels play host Southeastern Louisiana, but he won’t be in an Ole Miss uniform.

Lamar County, Sulligent renew rivalry Thursday night

Three weeks after kicking off the season against one rival, the Lamar County High School football team will play another Thursday night.

Lamar County beat South Lamar 61-20 in its season opener and is completing its game plan for its matchup at 7 p.m. Thursday against Sulligent.

“It kind of gets you started off right,” Lamar County coach Ken Adams said of the rivalry games. “There’s always a respect factor with either team, but there’s probably more intensity when it comes to the Sulligent game. Nobody here wants to lose to South Lamar, but the community gets even more intense when it comes to the Sulligent game.”

Religious differences

Bert Montgomery wrote (“Singing ‘Father Abraham’”, Sept. 14, 2009) of a gathering he attended on Sept. 10 at Mississippi State’s campus, where Christians, Muslims, and Jews met to discuss their respective faiths. He wrote that he was thankful that the night was peaceful and the participants were respectful of one another.
