A public meeting between the Columbus City Council, the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors and the Columbus-Lowndes Recreation Authority is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday in the Columbus Municipal Complex.
The groups will discuss funding ideas and details of a proposed six-field soccer complex.
The supervisors earlier voted to designate Burns Bottom as the preferred site for the complex, but called for a meeting to further discuss the project before voting or taking further action to purchase property at Burns Bottom.
The total appraisal for the 70-acre Burns Bottom property came to about $288,000.
The Columbus City Council Tuesday voted to donate 14.9 acres of city-owned property at Burns Bottom and in-kind services for the soccer complex.
“Primarily, we”ll discuss the financing of the soccer complex at Burns Bottom,” said District 1 Supervisor and Board President Harry Sanders, noting public comment will not be taken at the meeting. “This is really just a meeting to discuss financing.”
“We”re excited the meeting has been called and the process is one step closer to the purchase of the property, regardless of where the property may be,” said CLRA Executive Director Roger Short. “The meeting is really out of CLRA”s hands and in the hands of the city and county. Myself and the CLRA Board will be there for any support needed as far as questions, comments or suggestions we can assist with. We”re ecstatic about the project and the public support it is receiving.”
