For the second consecutive week, New Hope has scored more than 60 points, mostly generated by an explosion of offense on the ground.
Last week it was quarterback Tyrekus Brooks who carved up 223 yards rushing and five touchdowns to help set the program record for most points scored in a game with a 63-18 win over Houston. In Week 6, running back Jacob Jefferson picked up where Brooks left off and had a banner game in a 62-28 victory at Saltillo last Friday in a performance that earned him The Dispatch’s Player of the Week.
The junior used his 5-foot-5, 160-pound frame to rumble through and around the Tigers for 219 yards and five touchdowns on 16 carries. Listed as an athlete, Jefferson brings the pop of explosive play potential anywhere he’s lined up, whether it’s in the backfield or at slot receiver.
“He is a special kid,” head coach Allen Glenn said. “He’s not the biggest guy in the world, but he’s really so hard to tackle. He has a low center of gravity, and he’s really strong in his legs and he’s really hard to tackle. … He’s one that can catch it, we can hand it to him – he’s just one that can kind of do a little bit of it all.
“He’ll do whatever you ask him to do. He’s a great kid. You don’t have to worry much about him. … He has great character. He leads in his way. He’s not the ‘Rah Rah’ guy, but he goes about his business the right way, which the other guys on the team sees and kind of gravitates towards in how he handles his business. He’s a dual-sport athlete, he plays basketball and is one of our best basketball players at New Hope too, and he gets to impact a lot of people in the sports he plays. He’s a great teammate, very unselfish, cheers for his teammates when they make plays just as they cheer for him when he makes plays. So, he’s a joy to coach.”
