Mississippi State announced the death of former All-SEC pitcher Caleb Reed on Wednesday. Reed was 35 years old.
According to a GoFundMe page created by his friends and family, Reed was diagnosed with cancer in late May. The page was dedicated to raising funds for Reed, his wife, Robin, and their three children as he underwent treatment at UAB Medical Center.
“We’re saddened by the passing of former All-SEC reliever Caleb Reed,” wrote the official baseball team account on social media. “Caleb was an integral part of our 2011 Super Regional squad and the 2012 SEC Tournament Championship team. Our condolences to his family, friends and teammates.”
Reed was a standout member of the Bulldog bullpen in his time on campus, recording 21 saves over the course of his junior and senior seasons, posting ERAs of 1.55 and 2.47, respectively. He recorded 177 strikeouts in 207 career innings pitched with a career ERA of 4.22.
In his time at MSU, Reed was also named to the SEC Baseball Community Service team for his time spent volunteering in the Starkville community. He worked closely with the M-Club’s reading development projects in Starkville public schools as well as Thanksgiving canned food drives.
Reed helped make up a fierce pitching staff that included current major leaguers Brandon Woodruff and Chris Stratton, and became a key closer for the Bulldog team that would win the SEC Tournament in his senior year.
Reed appeared in all six wins over the course of the 2012 tournament win, including both semifinal wins over LSU and the championship win against Vanderbilt.
