MEMPHIS — Mississippi University for Women softball had a four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday at the Rhodes Invitational, but the Owls started a new streak, winning both games on Sunday for a four-game split in Memphis.
Taking on Austin College and Rhodes College, the Owls (7-3) were bested in a pair of two-run losses on Saturday, getting as close as tying things up in the fifth against Austin before allowing two runs in the bottom-half of the frame.
The tide turned, however, on Sunday as the Owls mounted a massive response in the final game of the invitational.
Down 2-0 going into the seventh against Rhodes, MUW mounted a three-run comeback, taking the lead for good to close out the weekend on a high and a 3-2 win.
The W had some late-innings magic in Sunday’s doubleheader opener as well, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth for a two-run cushion in what was an 8-6 win over Austin.
Junior Rylie Grisham had the performance of the weekend for the Owls, tossing six innings of two-run baseball in the final game of the invitational on Sunday.
She made three appearances over the weekend, allowing two runs, both earned, and nine hits over 10.2 innings, striking out six with just one walk.
Offensively, Maiya Joe arguably was the best at the plate, going 7-of-14 (.500) with two doubles and four RBIs. She’s now on a four-game hitting streak after recording a hit in all four games over the weekend.
Jessica Deming and Riley Phillips each had four-hit weekends, with Deming scoring a team-high six runs while recording four doubles, and Phillips scoring five runs and driving in three.
