Mississippi State Track and Field 4×100 runners made program history Wednesday night.
For the first time since 2009, State will have a short relay team running in the NCAA Outdoor Championship Finals. Sophomore Nicholas Fakorede, senior Kibren Moore, freshman Gabriel Scott and senior Sherman Hawkins Jr. ran a 38.73, good enough to qualify for Friday’s finals. The 4×100 finals are set for Friday at 7:02 p.m.
The 4×100 team were four of the 13 Bulldogs who competed in the first round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday.
MSU’s other relay team, the 4×400, earned second-team All-American Honors after their 15th-place finish. Hawkins Jr., freshman Keayari Lee, freshman Malachi Burton and junior Harry Ross-Hughes finished the race in 3:04.40. They did not qualify for the finals.
Ross Hughes also competed in the 800m, alongside his teammate, senior Sam Navarro. Ross-Hughes ran a 1:47.18, good for a 17th-place finish. Navarro finished in 21st with a 1:48.51 mark. Both failed to qualify for Friday’s finals.
Juha Nahri also made program history in the hammer throw. Nahri earned second-team All-American honors, and tied his personal and program best with a 66.48m. His throw was good for 14th place. Nahri is the first men’s hammer throw All-American in program history.
Sophomore Tuomas Närhi and freshman Kaden Cartwright’s seasons came to an end on Wednesday. Närhi threw 68.25m and Cartwright threw 68.02m, good for 18th and 19th place.
