A Crawford man identified as a person of interest in a Memorial Day shooting that left a mother and child hospitalized has been arrested on an unrelated Texas warrant, according to a Columbus Police Department press release.
Officers took Joseph Brooks, 18, into custody Tuesday after receiving a tip regarding his whereabouts. While speaking with Brooks, officers learned he had an active arrest warrant in Texas for armed robbery with a deadly weapon, the press release said.
Brooks was taken to Lowndes County Adult Detention Center, where the press release said he will remain until he is extradited to Texas.
Brooks is also a person of interest in the May 25 shooting on 24th Street North that injured two bystanders, a 24-year-old mother and her 18-month-old child, who was critically injured. The press release did not specify the current condition of the two victims.
The press release did not specify whether Brooks has officially been charged in connection to the May 25 shooting, though he was booked at LCADC on attempted murder and aggravated assault charges, according to the public booking information.
Neither Police Chief Joseph Daughtry nor Cpl. Nicholas Hairston with CPD responded to texts and calls from The Dispatch before press time Tuesday requesting clarification on Brooks’ charges, how long he’s been a person of interest in the investigation and if more arrests are expected.
The investigation of the May 25 shooting remains ongoing, the press release said.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call Columbus Police Department at (662) 244-3500 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151.
