COLUMBUS — Mississippi University for Women’s fall sports teams competed in several events last week, with the women’s soccer team standing out for back-to-back shutout wins in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

The Owls traveled for a pair of matches against Blackburn College and Eureka College, with Ana Ramos’ team winning 10-0 and 3-0, respectively.
Anacia Leyland bagged a hat-trick for the Owls in the demolition of Blackburn, scoring with all three of her shots on target. She was followed by Kiersten Taylor and Kimi Norway with a pair of goals each, as well as Abby Warchus, Haley Kelley and Alex Moon with one goal each.
Taylor also led the team with three assists against Blackburn, and led the team with two goals in the 3-0 win against Eureka the next day and was named SLIAC Player of the Week for her performances.
“Kiersten played a pivotal role in our offense this week,” Ramos said of Taylor’s play. “A huge congratulations, as this weekend saw her break a school record with career assists as a sophomore, as well as continue to break out of her comfort zone and look towards the goal more. Kiersten knows the assists don’t come without the team finding the back of the net and applauds her teammates for their willingness to commit to the totality of the play.”
The Owls now sit at 3-6-2 overall and 2-1 in SLIAC play and return home for a non-conference match against Rhodes on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
The Owls men’s soccer team also traveled for SLIAC matches alongside the women’s team, but struggled in 3-0 losses to both Blackburn and Eureka. BJ Pheasant’s team is now 0-10 on the season.
MUW’s other teams struggled last week as well, with volleyball losing matches to Crowley’s Ridge, Lyon College and Eureka, the latter match being a close 3-2 loss in conference play.
The cross country men’s and women’s teams finished 12th and 13th respectively at Belhaven over the weekend and the Owls tennis teams lost their SLIAC matchup against Huntingdon College on Saturday.
