COLUMBUS — Mississippi University for Women had another busy week in the athletic department, with four of its programs seeing action last week.

It was another big week for the Owls golf teams, with the men and women competing at the Lyon College Scots Fall Classic in Arkansas. The men competed with an A and B squad, and both finished in the top three with A squad taking first place. The women sent one squad, finishing second.
“I thought both of our teams started out a bit sluggish on Monday,” head coach Benji Williams said of the tournament. “But to their credit, both squads put it together nicely on Tuesday and the results speak for themselves. There is still plenty of work to do, but it does say volumes about our program that we can field two lineups capable of battling for a championship.”
B-team player Caleb Jennings was the highest-placing individual for the Owls, ranking fifth in the 56-player field. Matt Wilkinson, Matthew Phillips and Zach Riley all finished in the top-10 behind Jennings.

The women were led by Ashley Estabrook, who finished in seventh place, followed by Sara Grace Ramey (10th), Hailee Sumner (22nd) and Reagan Hammack (26th).
Estabrook posted a score of 174 over both days while the team as a whole finished with 762. The performance earned her the honor of conference golfer of the week.
“I’m very happy to see Ashley get rewarded with this honor,” Williams said. “Anyone who has watched her progress over the past two seasons can see her improvement and her hard work beginning to pay off. I believe there are many more good things in store for her on the golf course.”
Elsewhere, the Owls dove into St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
BJ Pheasant’s men’s soccer team drew 1-1 at Millsaps in nonconference play before suffering a 5-1 defeat against conference rival Spalding on Friday. Jordan Ware scored the only goal.
Ana Ramos’ women’s soccer team suffered a similar fate against Spalding, losing 3-0.
Over the weekend, the tennis and volleyball teams also saw SLIAC action, with volleyball losing both games in a tri-match at Spalding University. The Owls lost 3-1 to the hosts and 3-0 against Westminster.
The tennis teams traveled to LaGrange College in Georgia for conference play. The women’s team lost 4-3 on Saturday while the men were swept 7-0.
