GREENVILLE, S.C. — Morgan William scored a team-high 21 points, and Ketara Chapel scored all of her 10 points in the final 13 minutes Friday night to lead the No. 6 Mississippi State women’s basketball team to a 78-61 victory against LSU in the quarterfinals of the Southeastern Conference tournament at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
Teaira McCowan had 15 points and five rebounds, while Breanna Richardson had 12 points to help second-seeded MSU (28-3) set a program record for wins in a season. MSU will take on sixth-seeded Texas A&M, which beat third-seeded Missouri 62-48 on Friday night, at approximately 6:30 p.m. today (ESPNU). The winner of that game will play for the SEC title at 2 p.m. Sunday (ESPN2).
Chapel came off the bench for her first action late in the third quarter. She scored six points in the final 2 minutes, 41 seconds to help the Bulldogs erase a 39-37 deficit and take a 45-41 entering the fourth quarter.
William had 13 points and McCowan had 10 in the fourth quarter to help the Bulldogs pull away. MSU was 14-for-14 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. It also was 16-for-24 from the field (66.7 percent) in the second half en route to a 56-percent shooting effort (28-for-50).
Raignye Moncrief scored a game-high 25 points for seventh-seeded LSU, which slipped to 20-11. The Tigers shot 59.1 percent in the first half (13-for-22) and 51.4 percent (28-for-54) for the game. It marked the second time this season an opponent has shot 50 percent or better from the field against MSU. Tennessee shot 54.7 percent from the field in an 82-64 victory against MSU on Sunday in Starkville.
