Lowndes County sheriff’s investigators are seeking a suspect in a Sunday shooting that left one man dead.
At about 2:20 p.m., deputies responded to reports of gunshots on Steens Vernon Road near the Alabama state line.
After arriving on scene, deputies found Kyle Burnett, 24, of Columbus, unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant, in a text to local media outlets, said Burnett was driving his car Sunday afternoon on the road when he was shot and killed.
Investigators believe the incident to be an isolated event that poses no ongoing threat to the public, the press release said.
An autopsy of Burnett’s body has been ordered, Merchant said, which will be conducted at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Pearl.
Several people present on the scene Sunday were taken to LCSO for questioning about the incident, but no charges had been filed as of Monday afternoon.
The press release said investigators are continuing to gather evidence to determine the circumstances of the shooting. The press release did not specify if investigators have any persons of interest or suspects in the case at this time.
Sheriff Eddie Hawkins did not respond to calls or texts from The Dispatch by press time Monday.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact LCSO at (662) 328-6788 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151.
