TUPELO — Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science will have a sizable presence at the Tupelo Aquatic Center on Saturday for the 2023 Mississippi High School Activities Association Class I state championships.
The Blue Waves are set to have eight swimmers competing for podium finishes and state titles, and the program itself is very eager to get into the pool and get going.
“I truly believe that we are the greatest team in MSMS history, talent-wise,” senior co-captain Dylan Wiley said. “The pieces have come together. … We may be a small team, but it’s quality, not quantity, and we have great quality.”
MSMS competed at MHSAA North Half Championships last Saturday, finishing second among Class I programs with 111 total points.
The Blue Waves have been a competitive force this season and will look to give North Half champs Saint Andrews Episcopal School a run at it in Tupelo.
Headlined by seniors Maddie Brain, Rushyendranath Reddy Nalamalapu and Wiley, MSMS has plenty of depth in a number of events, including the 200 yard free relay, also finishing second at north half.
“I think we’re feeling good,” head coach Chris Chain said. “We’ve been practicing. We had two practices this week and we had good results in them. When you get down to this, you try to rest some before. … The key is, can you make it to states. … We’re going to be fighting up there for podium spaces.”
Preliminary rounds begin in the morning, and the top eight swimmers will compete for a state title in the afternoon/evening.
