The 2020-2021 Preseason ACC Player of the Year is headed to Starkville.
North Carolina forward Garrison Brooks announced on his Instagram account Thursday evening he will transfer to Mississippi State. He’ll have one year of eligibility remaining. His father, George Brooks, is on Ben Howland’s staff as an assistant coach.
In 28 games for the Tar Heels a season ago, Brooks was third on the team in scoring averaging 10.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest. The 6-foot-10, 240-pound senior shot 47 percent from the floor and 50 percent from 3-point range. In his career, Brooks has scored 1,211 points and shot 53 percent from the field.
After four years of waiting, MSU fans will finally get to see Brooks in a Bulldogs uniform. The former four-star recruit signed with the Bulldogs in 2017 before later transferring to North Carolina.
Although it’s unclear whether incumbent center Abdul Ado will return to MSU for another season or not, Brooks figures to be the starter at the five and form a powerful one-two post presence with Tolu Smith, the Southeastern Conference’s leading rebounder from a year ago.
The addition of Brooks will complement an offseason that has seen the addition of incoming freshmen Alden Applewhite, Keyshawn Murphy and Cam Carter while also mitigating the potential loss of D.J. Stewart to the NBA draft and the transfer of Deivon Smith to Georgia Tech.
