A pair of severe thunderstorms ripped through the Golden Triangle on Saturday and Sunday, downing trees and causing power outages and flooding roads throughout the area.
A storm that passed through Lowndes County at about 2 p.m. Saturday felled several trees and downed power lines, county Emergency Management Director Cindy Lawrence said. One tree fell on a house at Ronnie Cove, which is in the Lacy Subdivision east of Columbus near the Alabama line.
Sunday’s early morning storm, despite bringing more rain – close to 4 inches between 2 and 7 a.m. at Golden Triangle Regional Airport, according to the National Weather Service – only downed a few trees and caused little other damage, Lawrence said.
In Oktibbeha County, EMA Director Kristen Campanella said flooding had affected several roads, with one vehicle caught by floodwater on Starr Road needing assistance.
Jon Turner, director of public relations and marketing at 4-County Electric Power Association, said the storms caused as many as 1,800 rural customer outages. That number was down to less than 300 by mid-morning Sunday, according to 4-County’s website.
Several Columbus Light and Water customers reported power outages on social media Saturday, but the outage map on the utility’s website showed no outages as of mid-morning Sunday. CLW General Manager Angela Verdell did not respond to a call or message seeking more information.
Edward Kemp, general manager for Starkville Utilities, said the pair of storms caused fewer than 20 outages in the city.
More precipitation is anticipated throughout the week, with showers and thunderstorms forecasted from Thursday through Monday, according to NWS.
