For the second time in as many days, Mississippi State men’s basketball has signed a recruit.
After committing to the Bulldogs earlier this month, three-star recruit Camryn Carter signed his National Letter of Intent to play with MSU Thursday, one day after the opening of the spring signing period.
Carter is the 127th best prospect nationally for the class of 2021, according to 247 Sports. He picked the Bulldogs over other interested schools Virginia Tech and Ole Miss.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound shooting guard played at Oak Hill Academy, a well-known boarding school in Virginia that has groomed NBA talent such as Brandon Jennings and Rajon Rondo, under coach Jeff Smith.
“Cam is going to be a very good player for our program at Mississippi State,” MSU coach Ben Howland said in a news release. “He comes out of Oak Hill Academy this past season and had a very good year. He started every game for coach Smith. I have great respect for players who have gone through the Oak Hill program and what they have accomplished over the past decades. Cam is a very talented athlete who can really defend. He competes, scores and plays extremely hard. He’s a great kid as well.”
As a senior, Carter scored 13 points and averaged 4.3 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game.
“Cam excels on both ends of the court,” Smith said. “Defensively, he is a lockdown on-ball defender who also led our team in steals and deflections this past season. Offensively, he can play either guard spot. He has good three-point range and can really put pressure on the defense by driving the ball and creating for a teammate or himself. What I love most about Cam is that he is a tremendous teammate and is very coachable. He just wants to win. Cam will do whatever is asked of him on a daily basis in practice and in games.”
There could be opportunities for Carter to find his way into the backcourt early for the 2021-2022 Bulldogs. Former point guard Deivon Smith has transferred to Georgia Tech, while D.J. Stewart may decide to stay in the NBA draft if the feedback from scouts at workouts is to his liking.
He marks the third signing for MSU’s 2021 freshman class along with KeyShawn Murphy and Alden Applewhite. The Bulldogs are still likely to seek roster improvements from the transfer portal in the coming weeks.
