On the first day after the transfer portal opened for college basketball Monday, Kanye Clary became the first Mississippi State player to enter it.

Clary joined the Bulldogs last offseason in the portal from Penn State, where he averaged 16.7 points per game as a sophomore in 2023-24. But he was dismissed from the team late that season, and later filed a lawsuit against head coach Mike Rhoades and Penn State, alleging defamation, racial discrimination and illegal use of his name, image and likeness.
After transferring to MSU, Clary played in seven games with four starts, averaging 6.3 points. He then missed the rest of the year with a lower leg injury.
The Bulldogs lacked a true point guard for the rest of the season after Clary went down, with several players filling that role. Just three rotation players — Cameron Matthews, Claudell Harris and RJ Melendez — are out of eligibility after MSU’s season ended Friday with a loss to Baylor in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Clary is from Virginia Beach, Virginia and attended Princess Anne High School and then Manssanutten Military Academy. He was a bench player as a freshman with the Nittany Lions before becoming a starter the next year. If he is able to obtain a medical redshirt from his injury this past season, he will have two years of eligibility remaining.
