FLOWOOD – Heritage Academy football kicked off the 2024 season at Hartfield Academy on Friday, struggling to keep pace with a prolific Hawks offense in a 49-7 loss.
The Patriots (0-1) scored on their opening drive, answering a score by Hartfield, but stumbled throughout the rest of the first half. Quarterback Thompson Regimbal found Xzavier Webber down the sideline with a nice pass out in front, which Webber hauled in with one hand while holding off a defender. That set up the Patriots with a first down and a chance to cut the lead again, but a sack-fumble saw them turn the ball over.
The Hawks (1-0) scored again to end the half, aided by defensive penalties from the Patriots, and led 28-7 at the break.
The second half saw things get worse quickly, with an interception setting up the Hawks with a first and goal. Just a few minutes later the Hawks were up 42-7 and started the running clock.
The Patriots subbed in the backups for the final stretch of the game, giving Presley Gaskin some game reps at quarterback, but failed to score again.
The Patriots play again next week at Winston Academy.
