A teenager has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old in East Columbus on Saturday.
Jakody Moore, 19, of Columbus, was arrested Monday and charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to a Columbus Police Department press release.
Police are requesting help from the public to identify a person of interest in the case. Though the department released a photo of the person, CPD has not determined his name.
Officers responded Saturday afternoon to a report of gunfire at an apartment complex on Constance Lane in East Columbus, where they found two juveniles with gunshot wounds. Officers started chest compressions until paramedics arrived, the press release said.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said Marquez Carter, 16, died at the scene, while the second victim, 17, was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle for treatment.
Police responded to a second shooting Sunday morning near Airline Road and Woolbright Street, where multiple residences were struck by gunfire. Chief Joseph Daughtry said during a press conference Monday there is a “good possibility” the two shootings are connected, though he did not confirm the link.
Moore is being held at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center awaiting his initial court appearance. There will be more arrests to follow, the press release said.
Anyone with information regarding the case can contact CPD or leave an anonymous tip with Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151. Crime Stoppers may offer a cash reward.
