One teen is dead and another teen is injured from a Saturday afternoon shooting at an apartment complex on Constance Lane in East Columbus.
Officers responded to a report of shots fired at about 3:23 p.m. and found two juveniles with gunshot wounds, a Columbus Police Department press release said. The officers started chest compressions until paramedics arrived.
Marquez Carter, 16, died at the scene, Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said. The second victim, 17, was treated for his injuries at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle and released.
During a press conference Monday afternoon, Chief Joseph Daughtry said the two teens were together when a vehicle pulled up and shots were fired.
CPD Public Information Officer Bryan Moore told The Dispatch the department received another shots-fired call at about 9:42 a.m.
Sunday. Shots were fired into multiple residences near Airline Road and Woolbright Street, he said, but no injuries were reported.
Daughtry said there is a “good possibility” the Sunday shooting was connected to Saturday’s incident, but the department cannot confirm that at this time.
Daughtry said the department has already received tips from citizens, including information on the kind of vehicle involved in Saturday’s shooting. He asked the public to continue sharing whatever information they may have with investigators.
“We know a lot of people saw something,” Daughtry said. “A lot of people heard something. We know some people have friends that have seen things. And in a community like Columbus, stuff like this, when this happens, people talk.”
Anyone with information on the case can contact CPD or leave an anonymous tip with Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151. Crime Stoppers may offer a cash reward.
