A FedEx driver narrowly escaped harm after her truck caught fire Wednesday morning while driving down Self Creek Road near Adaton.
Oktibbeha County Fire Services Coordinator Patrick Warner told The Dispatch the driver had only just started her route at about 11:30 a.m. when she noticed smoke coming from the back of her truck.
The driver pulled over at the corner of Self Creek and Adaton Road and exited the vehicle. The truck then burst into flames and 30-06 ammunition she was carrying for delivery began firing as the flames spread throughout the vehicle.
“Some people behind the truck saw sparks and fire from underneath the truck as well,” Warner said. “She pulled the truck over in a driveway then the vehicle was just on fire.”
Warner said Central Oktibbeha and Adaton volunteer fire departments responded shortly after she pulled over and put the flames out. The driver was unharmed, and Warner said the cause of the fire is being investigated.
“It could have been an oil thing or something like that,” Warner said. “You can’t really tell with these kind of vehicles nowadays, but the cause is undetermined.”
FedEx’s Starkville office did not respond to calls made by The Dispatch by press time.
