STARKVILLE – A Maben woman has been arrested twice in just more than a month in connection to auto burglaries at city parks, where police said she took a child to serve as a cover for the alleged crimes.
Jakashea Cousins, 33, was charged Sunday with auto burglary after an alleged incident at the Sportsplex, according to a press release from Starkville Police Department.
Police received a call just before 7 p.m. Sunday from a citizen reporting “suspicious activity” related to the alleged auto burglary. When reached by The Dispatch on Tuesday, Public Information Officer Sgt. Brandon Lovelady would not elaborate about the suspicious activity at the Sportsplex.
Cousins was previously arrested in May for an alleged auto burglary at Cornerstone Park. During both alleged burglaries, she brought a young child to the parks to “provide a reason for being in the area before burglarizing vehicles,” the press release said.
Additionally, Cousins has been charged with multiple counts of auto burglary in Webster County for alleged incidents that occurred in February.
Lovelady encouraged the public to continue reporting suspicious activity.
“If you see something, say something,” he wrote in a text to The Dispatch. “Locking doors and securing (valuables) prevents most auto burglaries.”
Anyone with information about this incident or other criminal activity is encouraged to contact the Starkville Police Department at (662) 323-4131, Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151, or submit an anonymous tip through the SPD website. Crime Stoppers may offer a cash reward.
