The body of a man missing since last month has possibly been found at Lake Norris.
A Columbus Housing Authority maintenance worker was fishing at the lake Saturday morning and found a body officials are presuming is that of Robert Hargrove, city Public Information Officer Joe Dillon said. Hargrove had been missing since his car was found wrecked and abandoned Sept. 29 at the intersection of 15th Street South and Pickensville Road.
The body was found under some overhanging trees, partially in the water, according to a Columbus Police Department press release.
Dillon told The Dispatch the location is “walking distance” from the wreck site. The press release notes the water level had receded since the time Hargrove’s car was found.
The maintenance worker notified police, and they were joined by Columbus Fire and Rescue and Lowndes County Deputy Coroner Carol Culpepper to retrieve the body. Though the body was in poor condition, authorities presume it is Hargrove based on visible tattoos and clothing.
Coroner Greg Merchant told The Dispatch the body still had not been positively identified by press time Monday, and both he and Dillon said the cause of death is being investigated.
