NEW HOPE — There’s a first time for everything, and for New Hope and Choctaw County football, the first meeting between the two schools came on Thursday night.
It was the home opener for the Trojans, looking to get back on track after a tough season-opening loss against Itawamba Agricultural, and it was a chance for the Chargers to spoil the party.
That’s exactly what Choctaw County did, reaching a running clock before the stroke of halftime as New Hope was shut out, 40-0, on Thursday night.
Choctaw County (2-0) scored all 40 of its points in the first half, using the combo of junior wide receiver Caleb Cunningham and sophomore running back Jeramiah Miller to carve up the New Hope (0-2) defense.
Cunningham recorded well over 150 receiving yards in the win for the Chargers, recording three receiving touchdowns, including an 81-yard TD reception, and Miller ran for two TDs, including a 48-yard TD run.
Thursday night was definitely a home opener New Hope wants to forget, but it has a bye week ahead to prepare for arguably its most important game of the season, a rivalry matchup at Caledonia on Sept. 8.
