Mr. Mickens’ legacy
Mr. Mickens has stayed true throughout his time on the council. He has looked for every way he could squeeze the public funds to feed the elected officials’ of Columbus pockets. It started early when he felt that any travel advance money received and not spent was his and he did not have to account for all expenditures and return any funds to the city treasury left from the travel advance. He soon found out he must. He was always the one to press for higher salaries for council members including one that was forced through that by city charter and code could not be active until the next election so the council that night changed the code to make it effective immediately. Then when he was standing in for the mayor he again had the policy changed to increase the daily pay for vice mayor acting in the mayor’s capacity, when he was vice mayor.
I can’t count the number of times working in the private sector serving in my boss’ stead, even one time for three weeks, without a bump, and I still had my own full time responsibilities.
Mr. Mickens’ legacy will always be professing, “I’ll take that dollar,” as he stated during one council meeting.
