It’s hard to find an available pickleball court in Starkville. Even harder to play pickleball in Starkville with this heat at 5,000% humidity. Well, that all changes next week.
PKL ROW, an indoor pickleball facility at 100 Airport Road, is slated to open July 1. Led by five Starkville entrepreneurs – Wesley Ferguson, Brad Jones, Brian Lesley, Sean Owen and Gregg Jones – the new Starkville spot will be an indoor, year-round pickleball facility with a bar, and I’m not kidding when I say this, something for everyone.
In the last three years, pickleball, according to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, has grown more than 200%. But if that’s not something you’re into, co-owner Sean Owen said PKL ROW will have everything from Mahjong Mondays to Cornhole tournaments and even a 13-sport simulator bay.
“It’s got golf, skeet shooting and bowling,” he said. “… We just want to be an inclusive place. That’s what we are about. We’re going to be a chameleon of what the community looks like.”
This group wanted to create a place for those in the surrounding area to hang out and have fun. You can drop in to play pickleball or even just stop by to have a beer at The Hangar, a bar that overlooks the landing strip of Bryan Field.
The venue offers several options, including “drop-in play” which is $15 for two hours, $10 for students, and memberships for individuals, couples, family and students.
The facility includes 12 pro-level courts and a championship court with bleachers to hopefully host Pickleball tournaments.
“We are just five people who really just wanted to do something for this community,” Owen said. “We are just excited to see this dream become a reality.”
Also in town, construction has started on the new car wash.
5 Minute Express Car Wash, 701 Louisville St., already operates six Mississippi locations in Brandon, Byram, Columbia, Flowood, Hattiesburg and Pearl, with Starkville appearing to be its next addition. Hours at existing locations are typically 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays.
Moving over to Columbus, a new loaded tea store is open.
Command Fuel Nutrition, 508 Independence Ave., just held its soft opening this month.
Located on Columbus Air Force Base, the loaded tea shop has several loaded teas, dirty sodas, protein coffees and shakes.
It also delivers on base. Open 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday, starting in July, it will open 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays, and starting in August, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sundays.
Also in town, Golden Southern Junk Removal, based at 3735 New Hope Road in Columbus, is officially open.
Call (601) 761-1216 for a free estimate servicing the entire Golden Triangle. It offers removal of appliances, mattresses, garage and storage unit cleanouts and more.
According to its social media page, single item pick ups are about $150, mattress and box springs start at $150, recliners at $175 and appliance removal $175-$300. Garage and storage unit clean outs start at $300 and pricing includes labor, loading, hauling and disposal fees.
“When you call us, you’re not getting a large corporation,” a social media post from the business reads. “You’re getting a hardworking local family that believes in honest pricing, dependable service and treating every customer with respect.”
See y’all next week!
