Even with seven makes from deep and a game-high 22 points from Mia Bowen, The W’s women’s basketball team couldn’t put it all together against Belhaven at home on Thursday in a 73-59 loss.
The Blazers held off a late 7-0 run at the end of the first quarter by the Owls for a 14-12 lead heading into the second quarter and quickly pulled ahead for a 36-27 lead at the break. Still hot from the first half, the Blazers outscored the Owls 20-13 in the third before The W tried to initiate the comeback in the fourth. The Owls cashed in four of their seven-made shots from beyond the arch and managed to hold a 19-17 margin in the final frame, but it was enough to halt their three-game slide.
Holding a 30-16 margin in bench scoring, and with three players scoring in double digits and six total players with at least five points, the Blazers’ depth proved to be too much for the Owls to handle. Kamren Edwards led Belhaven with 18 points and three rebounds, and Savannah Hailey scored 17 points and grabbed 15 boards. Conley Langford and Calysia Phillips both tacked on 11 points for The W (1-9, 0-3), and Langford also grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double. Along with her points, Bowen grabbed nine rebounds and swatted three shot attempts to give her 38 blocks on the season.
