The high school soccer and basketball seasons are now in full swing for many area teams, some of which are already off to strong starts. Here’s a look at how each school is doing so far.
Starkville
Starkville’s boys soccer team fell to 2-4 on the season Tuesday in a 4-1 loss to Tupelo. Cole Sarrette scored the lone goal for the Yellow Jackets. The loss is the second in a row for the squad after dropping a 3-1 decision to Caledonia on Saturday. The girls soccer team was also defeated by Tupelo, 2-0, to fall 0-4-1 on the year. The team is back on the field Saturday at 5:30 p.m hosting Brandon.
A 74-40 romp of Neshoba Central on Tuesday gave the Jackets’ boys basketball team a 2-0 start to the season. Starkville took a 28-8 run into the second quarter and led 49-15 at halftime. Jaden Tate led the team with 14 points and five rebounds, and TJ Warren had 11 points, two assists, two steals and two rebounds. Jerwan McCarter and Ja’donis Wallace each finished with 10 points. The team has an opportunity to go 3-0 today when it hosts Columbus at 7:30.
The Jackets’ girls team is already 3-0. The squad outscored Neshoba Central 15-10 and 21-15 in the second and third quarters to pull away for a 65-56 victory. Jada Gay led the way with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and Zariah Brown produced 14 points, five rebounds and six assists. Starkville looks to stay undefeated today at 6 p.m. when the Falcons come to town.
Starkville Academy
The Volunteers’ boys soccer team was bested 6-0 by visiting Jackson Academy to fall to 0-2 on the season. Region 2-4A play begins for the team today at 7 p.m. at Lamar School.
SA’s girls basketball team fell to 1-4 on the season in a 60-33 setback at Oak Hill Academy. Jackson Academy comes to town for a 7 p.m. tipoff today as the Vols look to snap a three-game losing streak.
New Hope
Visiting North Pontotoc got the best of the Trojans’ boys and girls soccer teams, 4-3 and 7-6, respectively, to hand both squads their first loss of the young season. A chance for both teams to improve from a 1-1 record arrives tomorrow at Hernando. The girls play at 5 p.m and the boys play at 7 p.m.
Columbus
The Falcons boys soccer team lost its second game in a row on Tuesday, a 4-3 defeat at Kosciusko, and plays next today at 6:45 at Tishomingo County.
Columbus’ boys basketball grabbed a 71-28 rout of Forest Hill on Friday for its second win in a row to open the season while the girls team defeated Corinth 62-58. Both teams are back in action today at Starkville.
Heritage Academy
The last time the Patriots’ boy soccer team hit the field they brought home a 4-2 victory over Muddy River Homeschool on Monday to improve to 2-1. McKinley Kilburn scored two goals, and Ethan Singley and Campbell Callaway notched one goal each. They resume their season today at 5 p.m. against visiting Regents.
A 41-35 victory over Calhoun Academy improved the girls basketball team to 3-1 on the year, coming off a loss to North River Christian last week. The squad is back on the court at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday hosting Leake Academy.
Caledonia
After a victory over Starkville, Caledonia’s boys soccer team had its 4-game winning streak to start the season halted in a 3-2 loss at Booneville on Monday. For the girls team, they improved to 5-0 on the season by besting the Blue Devils 4-2. Both teams look to improve their records tomorrow at Southaven.
Both the Cavs’ boy and girls basketball teams moved to 2-0 on their season with wins over East Webster on Tuesday. The boys won 65-33 while the girls won 54-26. They are both back in action today at Mooreville.
West Point
The Green Wave’s boys soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak to open the season with a 3-2 win over Winona on Tuesday. West Point outscored the Tigers 3-2 in a penalty shootout to earn the victory. The girls team fell to 0-3 with a 4-0 loss to Winona. Both teams take on Houston at home on Monday.
