CLAY COUNTY – A man was shot early Sunday morning following an “illegal dice game,” Sheriff Eddie Scott told The Dispatch.
Scott said a group of about 40 people were riding four-wheelers on trails near Highway 46 when they stopped and started gambling near Dixie Road. An altercation during the game led to guns being drawn and shots fired at about 2 a.m., which is when deputies responded.
“(They) got into an illegal dice game, and that’s when the guns come out,” Scott said.
The victim, who was shot in the shoulder, was taken to North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point before being transferred to a Jackson hospital for continued treatment. While Scott did not know the victim’s current condition, he said the injury was non-life-threatening at the time deputies responded.
Scott could not confirm whether the victim was a bystander or involved in the incident. There are currently no suspects, and no arrests made in connection with the shooting, he said.
The investigation is ongoing.
