There’s good work to be done
Congratulations to Mayor Stephen Jones and the new and former members of the Columbus City Council. We are embarking on a new chapter filled with promises, opportunities, challenges and expectations! We must now come together, work together and break bread together to become that shining city upon a hill known as the City of Columbus, Mississippi, The Friendly City. Let the politics of the past political campaign stay in the past and now have the intestinal fortitude to forge ahead to bring out the best in all of us to make Columbus a better place to live, work and play for the benefit of all of its citizens. No one individual will have a magic wand to magically make everything just fall into place nor should we expect it. What we do expect is for them to work together collectively with confidence, competence and compassion. We have some challenges ahead with the flooding issues throughout the city, getting the Riverwalk Amphitheater up and operational, addressing our public safety concerns, the hiring of key personnel and other staffing matters, lowering our property taxes, what to do with Columbus Place, making the necessary infrastructure improvements. We need better code enforcement to deal with blighted housing and overgrown lots throughout the city and a much better working relationship between the mayor’s office and the city council. This all won’t happen overnight but let’s get to work, ladies and gentlemen, and then you will have our full support.
