LEARNED — Columbus Christian Academy boys and girls basketball came out strong in the first round of the MAIS Class 2A tournament on Monday at Rebul Academy, with both Rams teams recording victories and moving on to the second round.
The girls team defeated Humphreys Academy, 53-19, activating a running clock in the second half. The Rams will take on Riverdale Academy in the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Faith Yeates had 16 points to lead Columbus Christian. Satavia Watkins added 14, and Carrie Kinard had nine.
The boys team went down to the wire with Sharkey-Issaquena Academy as the two teams ended regulation tied at 74-74. CCA turned things up in overtime, outscoring SIA 15-4 for an impressive 89-77 win.
The Rams had five players in double figures. Joe Michael Edwards led the way with 30 points, including six in the overtime period. Garrett Weathers had 20, Drake Shaw had 16, Jackson Howard had 12, and Caleb McCarter had 10.
Headed to the quarterfinals, the Rams will take on Union Christian Academy (Louisiana) at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.
