RIDGELAND — Parklane Academy took command from the opening possession and never allowed Heritage to recover. With a steady night from senior quarterback Braxton Hughes and a defense that consistently flipped field position, the Pioneers claimed the MAIS Class 4A Division II state championship with a 42-0 win over Heritage Academy on Friday.
Heritage opened with the ball but immediately ran into trouble. A sack pushed the Patriots behind the chains, and a fumble moments later set Parklane up near midfield. The Pioneers capitalized quickly. Hughes found a receiver on a short pass that turned into a long gain, and three plays later he kept the ball and scored on a nine yard run for a 6-0 lead with 7:36 remaining in the first quarter.
Heritage tried to respond behind quarterback Joshua “Juice” Tate. He connected with Xzavier Webber and later scrambled for a first down to move inside Parklane territory, but the drive ended with an interception at the 2-yard line. Heritage forced a quick punt on the next possession, but the Patriots offense stalled again and returned the ball near midfield.
On the first play of the second quarter, Hughes went deep and connected with Dooley Copeland for a 78-yard touchdown to stretch the lead to 13-0. After a Heritage punt, Parklane moved the ball steadily and finished the drive with a 1-yard scoring run to make it 20-0 with 6:30 left before halftime.
Heritage’s struggles continued when Tate was intercepted again near midfield. On the very next play, Hughes delivered a 50-yard touchdown strike to Brennan Ellison for a 27-0 lead. A penalty on the ensuing kick pinned Heritage deep, and another short possession handed Parklane a short field. Hughes led the Pioneers back inside the 5 and punched in another rushing touchdown, followed by a successful 2-point pass that pushed the margin to 35-0 at halftime.
Parklane opened the third quarter with an onside recovery and continued to control tempo. The Pioneers methodically moved downfield, and the drive ended with a 10-yard touchdown run that increased the lead to 42-0 with 8:35 left in the quarter.
From that point on, Heritage played its best defensive stretch of the night. The Patriots forced two red-zone turnovers on downs and created several negative plays to slow Parklane’s offense. However, the Heritage offense continued to face long fields and could not find sustained momentum. A late interception ended their final chance to put points on the board, and Parklane controlled the closing minutes to secure the championship.
Afterward, Heritage head coach Tobias Smith said his team will use the loss as motivation moving forward.
“We have to rebound next season. The players have laid the groundwork for us to get back here again,” Smith said.
He also credited Parklane for their complete performance.
“We did not execute tonight. We were not clean. Parklane is a really good team,” Smith said.
Heritage finished the night battling through adversity on both sides of the ball, but Parklane’s early burst of explosive plays and field position advantage proved too much to overcome in the state title matchup.
