COLUMBUS — Mississippi University for Women basketball has had a solid showing in its first season as a full NCAA Division III member in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
That was punctuated on Saturday as both Owls men’s and women’s basketball secured key home conference wins against Eureka College.
MUW women’s basketball, a winless team during the 2022-23 season, is now 4-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play after Saturday’s 89-76 win over the Red Devils.
That win was fueled by a massive career day from junior Conley Langford, with a monster 36-point, 22-rebound double-double on 10-of-19 shooting from the field and 15-of-16 shooting from the line. Her 10th career double-double was undoubtedly her most impressive.
“Conley had one of the best performances today that I’ve ever seen,” women’s head coach Drew Johnson said in a release. “Aside from her scoring, which by itself is notable, her ability to dominate the glass from the shooting guard position is truly special, and I hope that people are able to watch and appreciate her performances.”
On the men’s side, despite being down two starters, the Owls pulled out a 90-78 win over Eureka for their first conference win of the season, improving to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the SLIAC.
Five players finished in double-figures in the win, three scoring 17 points or more. Cam Smith led MUW with 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting as the Owls’ three top scorers, Smith, Brye Hopkins and Chris Evans, shot 22-of-33 (66.7 percent) from the field in the win.
“We did a great job in the first half valuing the ball, which has been a daily focus and emphasis of ours, but had yet to find its way to gameday consistently for us to date,” men’s head coach Dean Burrows said. “We moved the ball better than we have all year today, made free throws and our guards stepped up after a rough one the other night.”
