CLAY COUNTY – A mother is dead following a Monday shooting on East Hazelwood Road.
Her adult son is believed to have shot her in the head before turning the gun on himself, Sheriff Eddie Scott told The Dispatch Tuesday.
Deputies responded to a 911 call at about 8 a.m. Monday, where they found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds in a home on East Hazelwood Road. Both were taken by ambulance to North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point before being airlifted to Tupelo.
The mother died Tuesday morning at the hospital from her wounds, and her son is in critical condition, Scott said. Charges are expected if the son survives his injuries, he added.
Clay County Coroner Alvin Carter could not provide identification information about the mother and son to The Dispatch by press time Tuesday.
Scott identified the son as Raphael Gabriel Tranchina, 30.
Scott said a family member who witnessed the shooting recounted the incident to investigators. Based on that account, investigators believe the shooting stemmed from ongoing mental health issues with the son, he said.
“Based on the evidence and the witness statements we’re satisfied as far as just the one shooter (in this incident),” Scott said.
