Mississippi State golf’s run in the NCAA Championships at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., ended on Sunday .
The Bulldogs’ missed the cut line to advance to match play after shooting 7-over par as a team in stroke play from May 29-May 31. Despite the early exit, State recorded its program-best finish in the NCAA championships.
MSU started the championships on a bad note, ranking 25th out of 30 teams after day one, and staying in 25th after round two. The Bulldogs cleaned it up and finished strong on day three. MSU had four players shoot under par and finished the championships in 17th place.
Senior Ugo Malcor had the best three-day stretch for the Bulldogs. He started his weekend with a one-over par finish, but shot an even 72 in round two and finished his tournament with a three-under in round three.
Freshman Jackson Skinner also finished three-under par in his last round. The finish was the brightest spot for Skinner on the weekend. He kicked off stroke play with a seven-over par performance on Friday and a three-over round on Saturday.
Graduate student Dain Richie finished the championships two-under par. He was the only Bulldog to shoot under par in round one (-1). He shot two over in round two and finished the weekend strong with a two-under finish on Sunday.
Senior Garett Endicott, who came into the weekend following a score of 14-under in the NCAA regional round, shot two-over during the three rounds. His best round came on day three, finishing one-under par.
Endicott’s season ended with a selection on the PING All-Southeast Region team and earned his card for the PGA TOUR Americas. With the card, Endicott is just two levels away from earning his PGA Tour Card. If he finishes 10th in PGA TOUR Americas, he earns a spot in the Korn Ferry tour, one step away from the top tier of PGA.
Junior Drew Wilson played in two of the three rounds. He shot a team-worst nine-over score in round one, improving in round two with a four-over par mark. Freshman Jackson Cook stepped in for Wilson in round three and shot eight-over.
The appearance in the NCAA Championships was only the fifth in program history. MSU also earned a spot in match play of the SEC tournament in late April for the third time in program history.
The Bulldogs took home tournament wins in the Cullan Brown Collegiate tournament in Lexington, Kentucky and the Mossy Oak Collegiate tournament in West Point. State also amassed six top-five finishes over the season.
