STARKVILLE – Mississippi State University released the contract details for its new head baseball coach, Brian O’Connor, on Thursday.
O’Connor signed a four-year contract and will earn an average annual base compensation of $2.9 million, paid by a “combination of department and private funds.
The deal includes a number of performance-based incentives. O’Connor will earn an additional $50,000 bonus for achieving each of the following incentives:
- Winning the SEC Regular Season championship
- Winning the SEC Tournament
- Winning Conference Coach of the Year
- Winning National Coach of the Year
The contract includes additional incentives for the following postseason achievements, which will defer to the highest number if more than one is applicable in a season:
- $50,000 for an NCAA Regional appearance
- $100,000 for an NCAA Super Regional appearance
- $150,ooo for a College World Series appearance
- $200,000 for a College World Series Finals appearance
- $300,000 for winning the College World Series
The college baseball Hall of Famer was named the new MSU head coach on Sunday after the team’s exit from the postseason. He boasts a 917-388-2 career record as a head coach, winning three National Coach of the Year awards. He was named head coach at UVA in 2004 after a decade as an assistant coach with Creighton and Notre Dame. He oversaw the most successful period in Cavaliers baseball history, including a national championship in 2015, seven College World Series appearances, and two ACC championships.
