Mississippi University for Women softball continued its stay in Myrtle Beach, S.C., with a split of its games on Thursday. The Owls lost 4-2 against Dickinson College before shutting out Vermont State Castle 7-0. The side then dropped both Friday games, losing 4-0 to Penn College and 11-1 to Penn State Altoona.
The win against Vermont State saw a strange course of offensive production for The W.
Maiya Joe was walked in all four of her appearances at bat for the Owls, part of a 12 walk performance by the order as a whole to help get runners on base.
The Owls only registered four hits all day, scoring on a 2-run single in the fourth inning and proceeding to score three runs on walks and one on a wild pitch as Vermont State collapsed in the fifth inning.
Riley Phillips, Brooklyn Rhodes, Brooklyn Wood and Chloe McClain got the hits for The W, and McClain registered 3 RBIs with her hit in the fourth and a walk in the fifth. Ashton Farnell added another run with a sac fly.
Rhodes had a solid day in the circle for the Owls, shutting out the Spartans over seven innings with six strikeouts and no walks while allowing just three hits.
The Owls, now 10-8 on the season, will get a week to rest and reset before beginning St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at home against Lyon College and Eureka College next weekend.
