COLUMBUS — The Mississippi University for Women’s baseball and softball teams both saw midweek action on Wednesday, including the first home series for the Owls baseball team, who split a doubleheader with Webster University, while the Owls softball team was swept in a doubleheader at Millsaps College.
Owls baseball coach Scott Mularz and company returned home after a wild sweep of Fontbonne University to lead off St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, welcoming Webster in a doubleheader at Columbus Christian Academy.
Due to a lack of facilities, the Owls only have four home doubleheaders on their schedule, all in conference play, at CCA.
The Owls split the matchup, losing, 7-1, in the first game before winning, 6-2, in the second. Center fielder Matthew Windham scored the only run of the game when he was walked with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, a run that was stopped short to end the comeback effort.
The Owls were more on top of things in the second game, and despite surrendering a run in the first inning, they answered with six of their own over the next four innings to take the lead. Avery Benson and Swayze Rikard drove in a pair of runs each, and Windham and Tyler Estabrook added once each.
Chris Ellis got the win on the mound, his first of the season, and Campbell McCluney got the save.
It was a long day for the Owls softball team in Jackson, losing, 8-2, in Game 1 and a 7-0 shutout in Game 2.
The Owls took the lead through a Riley Phillips home run on the leadoff pitch, and Brooklyn Rhodes added another solo shot in the sixth, but the Owls managed just five more hits across both games.
The baseball team will hit the road again for a doubleheader at Blackburn College on Saturday while the softball team returns home for a weekend of SLIAC action, beginning with a doubleheader against Lyon College on Friday.
