For the second straight game on a road trip through St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents, The W’s men’s basketball team couldn’t pull a victory over the finish in the final moments.
On Saturday at Spalding University, the visiting Owls battled back from being down seven points in the second half to cut their deficit to just one point three times, twice in the final 1:56, but a sudden shooting slump and a pair of fouls by Tyler Bohannon and Tray Huguley with just 11 seconds left gave the Golden Eagles the opportunity to put the game out of reach in a 64-62 loss – the team’s third straight.
Both teams attacked each other out of the gate on offense and combined for 10 ties and nine lead changes in the first 22 minutes before an 8-2 run by Spalding provided what became the game-winning separation. It was an off night of shooting for the usually efficient Owls (10-9, 6-4) as they were held to just 40.8% from the floor, well shy of their NCAA Division III-leading 53.3%, and they were outrebounded 39-25.
Huguley led the team with 22 points and eight rebounds, and Tyler Shephard added 20 points and six boards as the only two Owls to hit double-digit points. Devin McCaine rounded out the top three scorers with eight points.
Looking to snap a three-game losing streak, the Owls begin a two-game homestand on at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against visiting Blackburn College.
Spalding 80, MUW women 57
The Golden Eagles raced out to a 23-11 lead after the first quarter on Saturday and put the game on cruise control the rest of the way, handing The W’s women’s basketball team its third straight SLIAC loss, 80-57.
Spalding led 39-24 at halftime and extended its lead to 60-36 heading into the final quarter, mostly due to its 61-35 edge on the boards and its 12 made shots from deep. Conley Langord led the Owls (4-14, 3-7) in scoring with 22 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Rhianna Dinkins finished with nine points, and Jakayla Smith and Mia Bowen both chipped in eight points each.
Like the men’s team, The W’s women’s squad hosts Blackburn College on Thursday with an opportunity to snap a spree of four straight losses. Their contest tips off at 5:30 p.m.
