COLUMBUS — Mississippi University for Women saw two of its student-athletes honored in the first week of the season with Luke Yocum and Alex Moon earning Player of the Week honors for their respective sports by the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletics Conference.
Yocum, men’s golf, and Moon, women’s soccer, both began the 2024-25 season with memorable performances over the weekend.
Yocum traveled with the Owls golf team to the Transylvania Fall Invitational where the team finished in fourth place with a composite score of 580. Individually, Yocum finished in eighth out of 96 players, shooting a two-under-par total of 142 for the weekend.
“Luke has picked up this fall right where he left off last spring,” Owls golf coach Benji Williams said of Yocum’s performance. “This past weekend, he played within himself and was consistent. I’m very happy for him to receive this award and have his hard work recognized.”
In women’s soccer, Alex Moon was central to the Owls’ performances to start the new season. A difficult 3-0 loss on Friday against Huntingdon College was followed by a 0-0 draw against LaGrange College on Sunday.
The Owls leaned on Moon in both games, and she registered a school-record 19 saves in the draw against LaGrange. She faced 30 shots total, the third-most of any goalkeeper in school history.
“Alex has been as steady as a rock for the team and has truly stepped up to be a mentor for our team as well as the local soccer community,” women’s soccer head Coach Ana Ramos said of Moon. “This award is well-deserved and shows her dedication to her craft. I know she will say she couldn’t do it without the help from her teammates, but I couldn’t think of a more deserving player this week.”
