Making his first start of the season, Coastal Carolina pitcher Scott Doran surrendered two runs over six innings of work against No. 25 Ole Miss as the Chanticleers defeated the Rebels 9-2 at the BRUCE BOLT College Classic at Daiken Park in Houston, Texas.
Ole Miss (10-2) junior second baseman Dom Decker hit his third home run in two days in the loss. The Rebels went 1-2 in the tournament with a win over Ohio State and losses to Baylor and Coastal. Ole Miss sophomore starter Wil Libbert went 4 2/3 innings and surrendered four earned runs. He issued four walks and had five strikeouts.
Libbert struck out the side in the first inning and retired the first six Chanticleer (7-4) batters of the game. He hit a bit of trouble in the third inning, however, as a single and walk put runners on the corners with one out. Dean Mihos singled Walker Mitchell in from third for the game’s first run, though a Libbert strikeout and failed stolen base attempt ended Coastal Carolina’s threat.
Decker hit his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the third, a two-run shot to right field that put the Rebels up. Coastal Carolina loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and tied the game on a Mihos RBI groundout, and a two-out, two-run double from Trace Mazon made it a 4-2 game and ended Libbert’s outing. Redshirt sophomore JP Robertson entered the game in relief and surrendered 2 runs in 1 2/3 innings.
The Chanticleers – who advanced to the College World Series final a season ago – added two runs apiece in the sixth and seven innings and another in the eighth. Sophomore Walker Hooks pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and gave up an earned run. The Rebels committed three errors in the game and left six runners on base. Mazon led Coastal Carolina with two hits and two RBIs. Mihos also drove in a pair of runs.
Ole Miss hosts Memphis today at 6:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
