South Carolina starting pitcher Brandon Stone pitched a complete game against No. 11 Ole Miss Thursday night as the Gamecocks won the series opener with the Rebels 3-2. It’s Ole Miss’ (27-11, 9-7 SEC) third loss in a row.
Sophomore catcher Austin Fawley hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning, his fourth home run in as many games he has played in. He has hit 10 home runs this season, which is tied for second-most on the team with senior left fielder Mitchell Sanford. Sanford hit his 10th home run of the season in the sixth inning.
Redshirt junior Hunter Elliott pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up three earned runs with five strikeouts and a walk. Junior Mason Morris pitched a hitless 2 2/3 innings in relief with six strikeouts and no walks.
South Carolina scored a run in the first inning, but Fawley tied things up for the Rebels with his longball to left-center in the third. South Carolina (22-17, 3-13) retook the lead in the fifth on a pair of RBI singles from Gavin Braland and Nathan Hall, though the Gamecocks stranded runners on second and third to end the inning. Sanford hit a towering flyball to right with one out in the sixth to trim the deficit back to one.
The Rebels had two base runners over the final three innings and put two runners in scoring position the entire game.
Ole Miss plays South Carolina Friday at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+
