MUW senior slugger Zach Johnson made history Wednesday as the first-ever Owls baseball player to be named the St. Louis Intercollege Athletic Conference Player of the Year and headlines a total of four Owls who all brought home conference awards.
Chase Marshall, Baron Brack, and Johnson were each named First Team All-SLIAC, and Matthew Windham made the All-SLIAC third team. Griffin Fuller was also named to the SLIAC’s All-Sportsmanship Team.
Johnson, who played right field and first base, topped the conference in runs scored (39), finished third in total hits (37) and home runs (7). His 27 RBI were the seventh most in the conference and his .409 batting average is the third-best in school history.
Marshall, who played middle infield, led the team with a .390 batting average in conference play – the seventh best in the SLIAC. He also hit five home runs.
Brack, the Owls’ designated hitter, started all 24 conference games and finished second in triples (4) to go with 40 RBI.
Windham, a centerfielder who hit .340 in SLIAC play, was second in the conference in at-bats (106), third in runs (36), third in triples (3), fifth in sacrifice flies (4), seventh in total hits (36) and 11th in homers (4).
The Owls closed out the year with a 22-18 overall record in a 4-2 loss to Westminster on Monday in the quarterfinals of the SLIAC tournament.
