Already in rarified air, Mississippi State’s Josh Hubbard added another bit of history to his lengthy and decorated resume Wednesday afternoon.
The sharp-shooting junior guard from Madison became the first-ever male basketball player in state history to be awarded the Howell Trophy three times. Named after former MSU basketball player and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Bailey Howell, the honor is given annually by the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame to the state’s top collegiate basketball player. The occasion marked the third consecutive season Hubbard was awarded the trophy.
Hubbard, a three-time All-SEC selection, closed out the 2025-2026 season as the team’s top scorer (22.1 ppg) and drained 95 shots from deep to help set a new program mark for all-time 3-pointers made (311). He also set the single-game record for 3-pointers (10) against Auburn on Feb. 18 on the same night he scored a career high 46 points. His 1,947 career points are the fourth most in program history and he is one of only three men’s basketball players in the SEC – Howell (MSU), Pete Maravich (LSU) and Vernon Maxwell (Florida) to have three of his school’s top-10 scoring seasons.
Bulldogs have claimed the award seven out of the past eight seasons, with Hubbard joining two-time recipient Quinndary Weatherspoon, Iverson Molinar, Reggie Perry and Tolu Smith III as recent winners.
