The 2026 postseason has included a lot of “first since 2021” moments for Mississippi State baseball.
Last weekend was the first time since 2021 that Dudy Noble Field hosted postseason baseball. It was the first time since 2021 that State won a regional. Now, Saturday marks the first time since 2021 that State will play in a super regional game.
MSU heads to Athens, Georgia, to face SEC-foe Georgia for the right to play for a College World Series in Omaha. First pitch of the supers is Saturday at 10 a.m. Game 2 is set for 11 a.m on Sunday. An if necessary Game 3 is scheduled for Monday, time to be decided.
State’s series at Georgia will be its 11th super regional appearance. Because it’s been a while since State has played on the supers stage, let’s look back at MSU’s super regional appearances.
2021 win against Notre Dame (2-1)
The apex of Mississippi State Baseball came in 2021.
It was the Bulldogs third-straight super regional win and fifth-straight super regional appearance (ignoring the Covid-shortened 2020 season, of course).
MSU hosted Notre Dame in the 2021 Super Regionals. State took Game 1, 9-8, dropped Game 2, 9-1, but won a winner-take-all Game 3, 11-7. A six-run second inning in the rubber match proved to be the decider, clinching MSU’s spot in the College World Series and eventual national championship.
A double dose of Tanner paved the way for State in game three. Tanner Allen and Logan Tanner combined for five RBI and four runs scored.
2019 win against Stanford (2-0)
MSU dominated Stanford en route to its second-straight CWS appearance.
The Bulldogs won Game 1, 6-2, and took Game 2, 8-1, in Starkville. Elijah Macnamee and Dustin Skelton each had three RBI in the second game. Peyton Plumlee went 6.2 innings, allowing one run and tallying six strikeouts.
2018 win at Vanderbilt (2-1)
For the first time on this list, MSU went into its 2018 regional against Vanderbilt on the road.
Both teams were No. 2 seeds and won their regionals on the road as underdogs. The Commodores swept MSU earlier in the year, outscoring the Bulldogs 19-4 in the first SEC series of the season.
State took Game 1, 10-8, and had a 3-2 lead going into the eighth inning of Game 2. Vandy rallied, winning 4-3 and setting up a Game 3. MSU led 6-3 in the bottom of the ninth, but three runs from Vandy forced extras.
State put up a four-spot in the top of the 11th, and clinched its spot in the CWS with a 10-6 victory. State won five elimination games in a row, losing their first game of the regional round before rattling off four in a row to get to supers.
It marked State’s first ever road super regional win.
2017 loss at LSU (0-2)
MSU’s 2017 season ended with two losses to LSU in the super regionals.
The Bulldogs had to win four straight games to get to Baton Rouge after losing its first contest in the Hattiesburg Regional. State was close to winning Game 1, going into the bottom of the eighth with a 3-0 lead, but collapsed, allowing LSU to score four runs in the frame to win 4-3.
LSU rolled Game 2, beating MSU 14-4.
2016 loss against Arizona (0-2)
State dropped two heartbreaking games against Arizona in the 2016 super regionals.
The Wildcats came to town after winning its regional as a No. 2 seed. They beat the Bulldogs 1-0 in the opener of the super regional. Bobby Dalbec, who has six major league seasons under his belt as an infielder with the Red Sox, pitched 8.2 shutout innings with nine strikeouts against MSU.
The Bulldogs lost a devastating 6-5 shootout in Game 2 of the supers. MSU led 5-1 going into the bottom of the eighth, but Arizona scored four runs in two innings to force extras and walked it off in the 11th.
Athletics’ outfielder and designated hitter Brent Rooker was the standout for MSU, going 3-4 with two home runs.
2013 win at Virginia (2-0)
MSU head coach Brian O’Connor was in the opposing dugout for the 2013 super regional.
The Bulldogs dominated UVA in Game 1 of the series. MLB veterans Adam Frazier and Hunter Renfroe led MSU with three RBI each.
Rain suspended Game 2 until Monday, but the Bulldogs pulled off a 6-5 win to clinch the CWS.
2011 loss at Florida (1-2)
Florida took Game 1 of the series without any struggle, beating MSU 11-1.
The Bulldogs forced a Game 3, scoring two runs in the ninth for a 4-3 win. Caleb Reed pitched 5.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing one run on four hits.
MSU led 6-4 in the top of the seventh in Game 3, but the Gators scored three in the bottom of the inning and once in the eighth to secure an 8-6 win.
2007 win against Clemson (2-0)
MSU got revenge on the team that ended its 2006 season in the 2007 super regional.
The Bulldogs beat Clemson in two games, beating the Tigers 8-6 in Game 1 and 8-5 in Game 2.
2001 loss at Cal State Fullerton (0-2)
The Bulldogs, under Pat McMahon, traveled to Cal State Fullerton after winning its regional in Columbus, Ohio.
MSU fell flat against the Titans, losing 13-2 in Game 1 and 9-3 in Game 2.
2000 loss at Clemson (0-2)
MSU lost its first ever super regional in two games at Clemson.
The Tigers beat the Bulldogs 11-4 in Game 1 and 9-4 in Game 2.
