STARKVILLE — The Mississippi State University football program appears to have added to its receiving depth Wednesday.
Multiple outlets reported that Louisiana receiver Shelby Christy gave a verbal commitment to MSU on Wednesday night.
Christy, who attended the MSU Big Dawg Camp a couple weeks ago, is the 14th player from the Class of 2013 to give a verbal commitment to MSU.
“The reason I picked MSU was the coaching,” Christy told BulldawgJunction.com. “Coach (Dan) Mullen and Coach (Angelo) Mirando are very good coaches and made me feel wanted. I have been to Mississippi State twice and I have felt at home both times. I love it there. ”
Christy, who is 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, is one of five wide receivers to commit to MSU. The Bulldogs will lose as many as four starting wide receivers from this season’s roster.
“If you look at the class we have coming in, we have a chance to be one of the top wide receiver classes in the country,” Christy said. “We are all big and strong and can run. It’s going to be exciting.”
According to Rivals.com, Christy is the 26th-best prospect in the state of Louisiana, and 85th best receiver talent in the country. Last season, he led Dutchtown High School to an 11-1 finish. The team lost to Ponchatoula 28-14 in the first round of the Class 5A Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoffs.
Christy selected MSU over as many as 14 scholarship offers, including
the University of Mississippi, Georgia Tech University, the University of Nebraska, and Vanderbilt University. Verbal commitments are non-binding. He will have to wait under the first week of February to make sign a National Letter of Intent.
