WEST POINT — Eight consecutive batters reached base during an eight-run second inning that propelled the Lowndes County All-Stars to an 18-11 win over the West Point All-Stars on the opening day of the 10U South Dizzy Dean Baseball state tournament on Thursday at the Jesse W. Harmon Sports Complex.
Lowndes County moves on to face Louisville, a winner over Union on Thursday, in Friday’s main bracket semifinals at 2 p.m. Newton County will face Choctaw County in the other semifinal at the same time on an adjoining field.
A busy consolation bracket on Friday will include West Point vs. Starkville Maroon at 10 a.m. and Caledonia vs. Bruce and Starkville White vs. Columbus, both at noon.
No local teams remain in the main bracket of the 8U East tournament, also in West Point, but Lowndes County will face Starkville and Caledonia will meet Houston at 2 p.m. in the consolation bracket.
With baseball in West Point, Dizzy Dean softball’s tournament was opening in Caledonia, which is hosting the 8U South and 12U tournaments.
Starkville All-Stars defeated Lowndes County (12-6) and West Point 15-10 to reach the main draw semifinals of 8U South, where they will battle Yazoo County, which defeated Louisville (16-7) and Caledonia (15-14) to advance. That game will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, while Hatley and Houston will meet in the other main bracket semifinal.
The consolation bracket games will be played Friday, with Lowndes County facing Amory at 10 a.m., Louisville taking on Mantachie at 11:30 a.m. and Columbus battling West Point at 1 p.m. The winner of that last game will meet Caledonia at 4 p.m. Friday.
