Starkville’s basketball teams and West Point’s boys squad all have kept their undefeated streaks alive through the beginning of the basketball seasons, which has not been kind to some teams like Starkville Academy’s girls and New Hope’s boys.
Here’s a quick look at how some teams are doing.
Starkville
Coming off a victory over Tupelo Friday, the Yellow Jackets girls basketball kept its undefeated streak alive on Monday with a 73-41 victory against visiting Pontotoc in which four players notched double-digit points.
Zariah Brown led the team with 15 points, Jade Brown had 14 points, Jada Gay had 14 points as well and Logan Warren finished with 13 points for Starkville’s seventh straight win to open the season.
The boys team (5-0), which also defeated Tupelo on Friday, hosted Arlington yesterday while the girls played at Booneville.
West Point
The Green Wave’s boys basketball team is rolling to begin the year and added to its undefeated mark Monday with a 64-27 win over Philadelphia. West Point (6-0) plays at West Lowndes at 6:16 p.m. on Saturday looking to stay unbeaten. The Green Wave’s girls team (3-4) is also back in action Saturday and plays at 5 p.m. against West Lowndes.
Starkville Academy
The Volunteers’ girls basketball team fell to 1-7 with a 46-36 loss to Choctaw County on Monday that is the team’s sixth straight defeat. The team took on Jumpertown yesterday looking to snap its slide.
New Hope
The girls basketball team of the Trojans picked up its second win in three tries on Friday with a 52-49 victory over Itawamba Agricultural. New Hope took a 23-22 deficit to the break and out scored Itawamba 30-26 the rest of the way. The squad is back on the court on Saturday at 1 p.m. hosting Kosciusko.
The Trojans’ boys basketball team fell to Itawamba on Friday 65-58 for the team’s (1-2) second loss of the year but rebounded on Monday with a 55-47 win over Greensboro, the team’s first triumph of the season. The Trojans were back on the court yesterday in the Turkey Shootout in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for a game against Talladega.
Columbus
