STARKVILLE — Schnider Herard last saw the court Dec. 20. Against Little Rock, the 6-foot-10 sophomore center played one minute in the Mississippi State men’s basketball team’s 64-48 victory at Humphrey Coliseum. Herard committed two fouls and a turnover.
On Sunday, Herard announced he was leaving the team and going to transfer. Herard, who was averaging 1.0 points and 2.1 rebounds in eight minutes a game, was a four-star prospect and rated the 49th-best player in the Class of 2016.
MSU’s statement in response to the news didn’t include a comment from MSU coach Ben Howland or Herard. Howland hasn’t held a news conference since the announcement. MSU will play host to Arkansas tonight.
Herard started 19 games and averaged 18.6 minutes as a freshman. He averaged 5.1 points and 5.0 rebounds and had eight blocked shots.
This season, Herard’s role diminished as MSU moved deeper into its non-conference schedule. Aric Holman (21.7 minutes per game) and Abdul Ado 24.6) are the team’s only post players to average more than 20 minutes a game as Howland has opted to use smaller lineups.
Freshman KeyShawn Feazell also has emerged as a power forward who is playing eight minutes per game, while E.J. Datcher’s versatility enables him to play a variety of roles.
