SCOOBA — The East Mississippi Community College softball team secured its first playoff berth in eight years this week with a doubleheader sweep of Southwest Mississippi Community College at home. It was a must-win situation for the Lions, who claimed the last spot in their region for the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament.
The Lions, 15-25 overall, won 4-0 and 6-2 at home, finishing their conference schedule with an 11-17 record to earn the 10th and final seed for the upcoming NJCAA Region 23 softball tournament.
Lions pitcher Gail Wisher got the Game 1 win for the Lions with a complete-game shutout performance, recording eight strikeouts and allowing just one hit. She followed up with four innings from the circle in Game 2 before Allee Bennette entered the game in relief, earning the win over the final three innings.
Sasha King and Savannah Fralix led the team with two RBI apiece in the Game 2 win, with Wisher and Victoria Irby adding to the column to secure the 6-2 win.
Karen Wisher, Irby and Rachel Rommel drove in the runs in the Game 1 win.
The Lions will face Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Saturday in a play-in game at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field on the Jones College campus in Ellisville. The game will begin at 5 p.m.
The winner will advance into the double-elimination, four-team field, beginning on Sunday.
