CALEDONIA — Caledonia cross country had a big weekend at the Mooreville XC Invitational. The Cavaliers boys and girls teams each saw several runners stand out.
“Both teams did well on a brand-new course hosted at Mooreville Elementary school,” cross country coach Michelle Shepherd said of her team. “It was a true cross-country course with varying slopes and hills. The rain was a factor, causing some mud and semi-slick running conditions but overall, the teams ran well, matching their times on a similar course at TCPS earlier in the season.”
The boys team placed seventh overall, with James Luttrell leading the way in 5th place. He was followed by teammates Bryan Chora-Calvario (30th), Juan Gutierrez (63rd), Ian Hurt (66th) and Haiden Price (69th).
The girls finished second overall, led by Ella Shepherd finishing in 1st place and recorded the best time in either the 1A-3A or the 4A-7A divisions with 20:43. Close behind Ella was her sister, Addie (5th), and teammates Molly Harlow (7th), Peyton Kielman (11th) and Nelia Talaourar (40th).
It was Ella’s second win of the season after finishing with a 19:53 time at the New Albany meet in August, and her performance garnered her a nomination for the MileSplit Mississippi Performer of the Week.
“Ella is very dedicated and has set some big goals for herself this year,” Shepherd said of her daughter. “Getting nominated for Performer of the Week is a testament to her and the team, (which) is comprised of an amazing group of student-athletes who work hard and make running fun! We are very proud and wish her the best of luck!”
Both boys and girls teams are currently ranked at the top of the Mississippi 4A rankings, with the girls at No. 1 and the boys at no. 2 behind West Lauderdale. They’ll run again this weekend at the Saltillo Invitational.
